COENZYME Q10

Protects the Heart from Adriamycin!

Adriamycin is a powerful chemotherapy medication. It is often used to treat very serious cases of cancer. One of the side-effects of adriamycin is its toxicity to the heart. Depression of heart function is very common.

Coenzyme Q10 is found in the mitochondria of every cell in your body. The mitochondria are known as the power houses of cells because they produce most of the cell's energy. Coenzyme Q10 is very crucial for this energy production.

A pilot study done on patients receiving Adriamycin chemotherapy found that those individuals that took Coenzyme Q10 before the initiation of the chemotherapy did NOT have a significant decrease in the functioning of their hearts. The control patients did suffer from a significant decline in their heart function. (Judy, WV et al. Coenzyme Q10 reduction of adriamycin cardiotoxicity. In Folkers K, Yamamura Y (eds). Biomedical and Clinical Aspects of Coenzyme Q, vol. 4, Elsevier Publ., 1984, pp. 231-241.)

Based on this information and the non-toxicity of Coenzyme Q10, we recommend that all individuals undergoing adriamycin chemotherapy strongly consider supplementing Coenzyme Q10 before and during their chemotherapy.
